The Kiwanis Club of Long Beach Island is teaming up with members from other shore-area and Pennsylvania-based Kiwanis clubs on Friday, April 12, through Sunday, April 14, to help mend the devastation on LBI brought on by Superstorm Sandy, as part of the groups’ “Sandy Relief Fund” project. Jen Vare, an LBI homeowner and president elect of the Kiwanis Club of Levittown-Bristol, formed the idea.
“Instead of just handing out money, we thought it would be nice to come out and have some kind of service weekend to help out,” explained Faith Dixon, director of special projects for the Kiwanis Club of LBI.

Participants will gather for a casual get-together on Friday. Members will meet up with the Alliance for a Living Ocean on Saturday morning to help those involved with the organization’s environmental cleanups. Later that day, the group will partake in the Ship Bottom Sprint for Life, a 5K run and 2-mile fitness walk held every year in memory of Vito “Vic” Pennisi to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“Cupcake Girls” Emma and Nina of the St. Mary School Kiwanis Builders Club, owners of “2 Girls and Their Cupcakes” who started “Operation Cupcake” to help victims of Sandy, will provide cupcakes to the area’s first responders during the afternoon. To date, the girls have delivered 7,000 cupcakes to the American Red Cross shelters, military personnel, police officers, firefighters and EMTs who responded to Sandy.
A Texas Hold ’em tournament will be held at the Dutchman’s Brauhaus, located on Cedar Bonnet Island, to help raise money for the Kiwanis Club of LBI, which provides scholarships to high school students and offers other community support. Doors will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
The groups will be hosting a Children’s Morale Booster at St. Francis Community Center on Sunday for those who have been displaced by Sandy and forced to use the organization’s Food Pantry. Members will provide crafts, games, prizes, food and gifts. The event is a closed affair.
