In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co. and Emergency Medical Services hosted Fire Prevention Day at the Ethel A. Jacobsen Elementary School in Surf City on Oct. 7. The annual event is dedicated to teaching students the importance of working fire alarms, which can help save lives during fire emergencies.
Mike Wolfschmidt, assistant fire chief, said free smoke detectors are available for anyone who cannot afford them.
Firefighters from the Surf City and Barnegat Light companies helped students manage a hose and extinguish a replica of a burning building. Harvey Cedars and Beach Haven fire companies showed off their ladder and water rescue trucks. One firefighter dressed in full gear to help students recognize a rescuer in such a scenario.
The Barnegat Light First Aid Squad also brought over an ambulance for the students check out.
