Second annual get LBI Running 5K Run/Walk honors Surf City Fire Co. and EMS

The second annual Get LBI Running 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co. and Emergency Medical Services will be held on Saturday, May 17.
Last year’s inaugural event honored the brave men and women of the local fire department and EMS for their efforts during Superstorm Sandy. It attracted over 600 participants and raised nearly $10,000 for the local organization. This year’s race aims to bolster that appreciation by honoring the volunteers in good times and in bad.

The second annual event will be
held in Surf City on LBI.
“Last year we were showing our appreciation for what they did during a crisis in our town and in our community, and this year it’s more to say, ‘Thanks for doing everything else you do as well,’” said Kim Cassidy, race director and an avid runner who has spent her summers in Surf City since she was a child. “They do a lot for us that goes unseen in a lot of ways. They run primarily on donations, so I really wanted to continue to help them and support them and show them how much the community appreciates what they do every day for us,” she added.
Cassidy plans to hold the event every year on the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend.
The race will be run entirely in Surf City, starting at 9 a.m. T-shirt and bib pickup as well as day-of registration, which costs $35 cash, starts at 7:30 a.m.
Participants may also register online by Thursday, May 15. The cost is $33.20. To sign up, or for more information, visit getlbirunning.com.
Representatives from Meridian Health’s Paint the Town Pink Campaign, which has turned Surf City into “Surf Pink” for the month of May to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammography, will award a $100 gift certificate, donated by Surf City 5 and 10, to the race participant who is clad in the pinkest gear.
