Join community members, walk for hunger

Help end hunger one step at a time by joining local community members for the CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. The event will begin and end at the First United Methodist Church, located at 126 North Green St. in Tuckerton. Participants of all ages are encouraged to walk, jog, or bike with friends and family members at their own pace on the 1-, 2-, or 5-mile courses. Registration opens at 1:30 p.m. Enrollment is free, but monetary donations are encouraged. Refreshments will be offered.

The event is organized by local congregations in Tuckerton and Little Egg Harbor. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds raised will go directly to the Greater Tuckerton Food Pantry, which recently moved to its temporary location at the new Tuckerton Plaza on Route 9. The rest of the funds will benefit the Church World Service, an international organization dedicated to eradicating hunger and poverty and promoting peace and justice around the world.
“October seems like the best month to have the walk because the weather is usually good. It’s a fun time,” said First United Methodist Church secretary Carol Sceurman, who has been participating in the event on and off for the past 40 years. “The fellowship at the event is great. Everybody gets together, and it’s a nice group effort. You feel good about yourself; you feel good about what you’re doing. It’s really a good community effort.”
